Outdoor probes ensure the correct recording of the outdoor or room temperature and are thus an elementary component of every modern heating system. There are outdoor temperature probes in different types and with different equipment.
We often get questions like: What should I pay attention to when choosing an outdoor probe? Or how can I install my outdoor probe correctly? That is why we have compiled this guide for you.
-
What is an outdoor probe?
An outdoor probe is a temperature probe that is used as part of a modern heating system to measure the temperature outdoors or also in cold storage or storage rooms. Depending on the type, the sensor is either placed inside the housing or in a small protective tube. The temperature probes for outdoor use are deliberately designed to be inert so that weather-controlled heating and air-conditioning systems can adapt their performance continuously and smoothly to the outside temperature.
-
How does an outdoor probe work?
Outdoor temperature probes measure the air temperature and transmit the value to the heating system. This allows the heating or air conditioning system to control the heating output so that the room temperature remains constant at the value set on the thermostats, even if the weather conditions change. For correct operation, on the one hand, it is necessary to have a faultless installation in a place free of environmental disturbances. In addition, the characteristic curve of the probe should match the one stored in the heating system.

What are the different types of outdoor probes?
Viewed from the outside, the most striking distinguishing feature is where the temperature sensor is installed. Either the sensor is installed inside the housing or in a protective tube outside the housing. Like the housing, the protective tube can also be additionally perforated, depending on the measuring task, to allow better air intake. These probes are then more likely to be used indoors. In addition, we also offer outdoor radiation probes.
The actual measuring element of the outdoor temperature probe and outdoor temperature probe basic is located directly in the housing and is protected by it.
In the case of the fast-response outdoor temperature probe, it is located in an external probe tube. This can improve the response time of the probe somewhat.
Our outdoor radiation probe is used for measuring radiant heat for safe and constant temperature detection and control outdoors.
You can find an overview of all outdoor probes here and order them quickly and easily. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
In addition, outdoor temperature probes also differ according to which sensor was installed and how the probes are connected to the heating system.
At Testo Sensor we offer outdoor probes with these sensors:
- Pt100: Pt100 Class A, Pt100 Class B
- Pt1000: Pt1000 Kl. A, Pt1000 Kl. B
- Ni1000
- NTC: 5kOhm, 10kOhm, 20kOhm
- KTY: KTY81-110, KTY81-210
- DS18B20
- LM235Z
We offer the Pt sensors and the Ni1000 sensor in two-, three- or four-wire circuit.

What should I pay attention to when choosing the right outdoor probe?
The correct selection of the temperature probe depends on your measuring task and the associated requirements on the temperature probe.
- Should the temperature change be transmitted faster or slower?
- Will the probe be used indoors or outdoors?
- What characteristic curve must your sensor have?
Answering the following questions may help you make your selection:
- What type do you need?
Select a type that best suits your measurement task. -
What is the right sensor?
Make sure whether your heating system specifies a sensor and if so, which type. Especially with NTC sensors, please check carefully whether the characteristic curve of the sensor matches the characteristic curve stored in your heating system. If necessary, you will find this information in the operating instructions. The characteristic curves of our sensors can be found here in the overview or also in the operating instructions, which you can download for each sensor type.
-
What is the right connection type for your temperature probe?
We also offer Pt sensors and Ni sensors as three- and four-wire versions. Please check on your measuring device whether you need a three-wire or a four-wire.
-
Which connection cable do you need?
Our outdoor probes are delivered WITHOUT a connection cable. If you need one, please order the appropriate connection cable. Pay attention to whether you need a two, three or four wire version.
We offer the following options:
-
Where should I mount my outdoor probe?
Mounting material is already included in the scope of delivery for our outdoor probes. The information on the drill holes can be found in the operating instructions. There you will also find information on the exact installation location. You should avoid disturbing influences such as solar radiation, but also heat sources such as windows or air vents. Please also order a suitable connection cable, this is not included in the scope of delivery. Depending on the installation location, it may be advisable to order a sunshade or a ball throw protection.
