Radiation probes are used for measuring radiant heat for safe and constant temperature detection and control outdoors as well as indoors. The maintenance-free probes are optimally adapted to their environment.
-
What is a radiation probe?
A radiation probe is a temperature probe that is used as part of a modern heating system to measure the temperature outdoors or even in cold rooms or warehouses. The sensor measures radiant heat and not air temperature like our other indoor/outdoor temperature probes.
-
How does a Radiation probe work?
Radiation probes measure air temperature and relay the value to the heating system. This allows the heating or air conditioning system to control the heat output so that the room temperature remains constant at the value set on the thermostats, even if weather conditions change. For correct operation, on the one hand, it is necessary to have a faultless installation in a place free of environmental disturbances. In addition, the characteristic curve of the probe should match the one stored in the heating system.
-
What are the different types of Radiation probes?
Due to the dust-tight, jet-proof housing (IP 65) made of UV-resistant and impact-proof polyamide, the outdoor radiation probe is ideally suited for use in outdoor or humid areas and can also withstand adverse weather conditions.
The room radiation probe, on the other hand, is installed in an impact-resistant housing made of UV-resistant ABS, which blends in perfectly with any room thanks to its simple design.
You can order our Radiation probes quickly and easily here. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
In addition, radiation temperature probes also differ according to which sensor was installed and how the probes are connected to the heating system.
At Testo Sensor we offer outdoor probes with these sensors:
- Pt100: Pt100 Cl. A, Pt100 Cl. B
- Pt1000: Pt1000 Cl. A, Pt1000 Cl. B
- Ni1000
- NTC: 5kOhm, 10kOhm, 20kOhm
- KTY: KTY81-110, KTY81-210
- DS18B20
- LM235Z
We offer the Pt sensors and the Ni1000 sensor in two-, three- or four-wire circuit.

What should I pay attention to when selecting the right Radiation probe?
The correct selection of the temperature probe depends on your measuring task and the associated requirements for the temperature probe.
- Will the probe be used indoors or outdoors?
- What characteristic curve must your sensor have?
Answering the following questions can help you with your selection:
- What type do you need?
Select a type that best fits your measurement task.
- What is the right sensor?
Pay attention to whether and if so what type of sensor your heating system specifies. Especially with NTC sensors, please check carefully whether the characteristic curve of the sensor matches the characteristic curve stored in your heating system. If necessary, you will find this information in the operating instructions. You can find the characteristic curves of our sensors here in the overview or also in the operating instructions, which you can download for each sensor type.
- What is the correct connection type for your temperature probe?
Pt-sensors and Ni-sensors are also available as three- and four-wire versions. Please check on your measuring device whether you need a three-wire or a four-wire.
- Which connection cable do you need?
Our outdoor probes are delivered WITHOUT a connection cable. If you need one, please order the appropriate connection cable. Please note whether you need a two, three or four wire version.
We offer the following options:
-
What do I have to consider when mounting the temperature probe?
Mounting material is already included in the scope of delivery for our Radiation probes. You can find the information about the drill holes in the operating instructions. There you will also find information on the exact installation location. You should avoid disturbing influences such as solar radiation, but also heat sources such as windows or air vents. Please also order a suitable connection cable, this is not included in the scope of delivery.
